Tiger Woods won’t regain No. 1 ranking, struggles in Chevron World Challenge « ascoupsutr

He can’t regain the world’s top ranking and he isn’t the PGA Player of the Year, but Tiger Woods is in position to win a tournament, something he has not done all year.

Woods leads the Chevron World Challenge, his Thousand Oaks, Calif., tournament by four strokes going into the final round (3 p.m., NBC). He shot a four-under-par 68 Saturday and leads (17-under 199) after 54 holes for the first time in 2010.

He cannot, however, regain the No. 1 ranking in the world, a spot he lost this fall after occupying it for 281 weeks. He needed to win the Chevron and hope that Lee Westwood lost the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa. Westwood won by eight strokes.

One other downer for Woods: Jim Furyk knocked him off the throne as PGA Player of the Year, an award Woods had won nine of the last 11 years. Furyk won three tournaments and had seven top-10 finishes.
